West Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, popularly known as Coopwest, was established in March 1993 following an approval granted by the management of the western Division of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited to a proposal submitted by Messrs. Iyiola Kuyoro and Sunny Odutola for the establishment of cooperative society to take care of the welfare needs of employees in the division.
The inaugural general meeting of the society held on 2nd March 1993 was attended by 52 intending cooperators who signed a resolution to become members of the society. The society was subsequently granted a certificate of registration No. 547 by the Director of Cooperatives in the Delta state Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives & Tourism on 17th January 1996.
Today, the society can boast of membership in excess of 3,000 Nigerian employees in all the locations where the company operates. The operations of the society are guided by the Cooperative Societies Law, Cap 45 of the Bendel State of Nigeria laws of 1976 which was later modified by the Nigerian Cooperative Society Decree no. 90 of 1993 and the society Bye Laws as approved by the Delta State government.
